    Note: This position is based in Doha, Qatar. Office hours of the Brookings Doha Center often require an evening segment for coordination with Washington, DC events, and other purposes.

    Based in Qatar the Brookings Doha Center (BDC) is an overseas center of the Brookings Institution that advances high-quality independent policy research and analysis on major issues facing the Middle East / North Africa region. The Center enjoys an outstanding reputation for policy impact and cutting-edge, field-oriented research on socioeconomic and geopolitical issues facing the broader Middle East region. Open to a broad range of views and disciplines, the BDC is a hub for Brookings scholarship in the region.


    Research Assistant


    The Research Assistant provides research assistance and administrative support to the Brookings Doha Center (BDC). 



    Research Support (80%)


    • Conducts research and data analysis as requested under the direction of BDC fellows.
    • Provides qualitative and grammatical input on scholarly drafts and articles; assists in ensuring the professionalism and accuracy of publications; updates and checks existing data and footnotes; and copyedits and proofreads as needed.
    • Keeps abreast of literature on social-economic and political issues facing countries of the Middle East, including their relations with the United States, and other issues as requested.
    • Monitors and summarizes current developments in relevant research areas.
    • Collects, analyzes, and writes summaries of relevant material, including survey data, books, academic publications, press reports, interviews, government data, seminars, and reports from a wide variety of sources.
    • Drafts abstracts, briefing memos, and event summaries.
    • Attends and summarizes conferences and seminars when required.
    • Conducts other research work as requested.

    Administrative Support (20%)


    • Provides a wide range of logistical and administrative support: maintains files; responds to information requests; performs clerical duties; and composes, types, and edits memos.
    • Works with BDC staff to help arrange events; assists with logistical arrangements for BDC forums, seminars, and conferences.
    • Assists with screening calls and e-mail inquiries about relevant events, meetings, conferences, etc., in coordination with other BDC staff.
    • Helps identify possible candidates for nonresident and visiting fellowships.
    • Conducts other work, as requested.

    Education/Experience Requirements:

    Bachelor’s degree in economics, sociology, political science or other social or behavioral sciences, with an emphasis on social, political, and economic issues facing countries of the Middle East. Masters degree strongly preferred. Strong academic record, with evidence of outstanding quantitative skills, qualitative research, writing/editing, and analytical skills.  Working knowledge of Stata (preferred), R or SPSS.  Minimum two years of relevant experience (or Master’s degree).


    Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

    Professional level writing and editing skills in both English and Arabic. Background in and understanding of social, economic, and political issues facing the Middle East; knowledge of development issues preferred. Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to prioritize in a heavy-workload environment.
