  • Overview

    The Global Economy and Development program at Brookings aims to shape the policy debate on how to improve global economic cooperation and fight global poverty and sources of social stress. 

     

    The Web Content and Digital Media Manager oversees and coordinates the updating and dissemination of all Global Economy and Development Program (Global) web and social media content, including content from Global’s various initiatives and projects.  Reporting directly to the program’s Director of Communications and in collaboration with Brookings Central Communications, the manager develops and manages Global’s digital and social media strategy and tactics and advises on opportunities for content enhancement and optimization.

     

    We anticipate this position starting in November 2018.

    Responsibilities

    Design and Management of Global Web Content and Related   Center/Initiative/Project Content (55%)

     

    • Uses Wordpress to create, update and maintain all Global web pages in accordance with Brookings website standards and consistent with program’s research and communications goals.
    • Prepares blogs, articles, op-eds, Congressional testimony, event summaries, expert profiles, and other web content for publication.
    • Supports Global’s Communications team with editing content when needed.
    • Writes short synopses of publications and topics to accompany web content; finds and suggests accompanying photos.
    • Works with Central Communications or external vendors to initiate and manage requests for videos, infographics, and data visualizations.
    • Advocates for promotion of Global content across the Brookings website and through Brookings e-newsletters.
    • Performs regular editing of project and expert pages to maintain fresh content and communicates with staff assistants, research assistants, and scholars on updating the content and design of pages.
    • Serves as Global’s liaison to Brookings web team, keeping Global informed of new features and issues of concern; coordinates with other programs.

     

    Social Media Management and Digital Outreach (20%)

    • Manages @BrookingsGlobal Twitter feed in accordance with Brookings policies, including drafting and scheduling tweets about Global content and events, monitoring and measuring account activity, and live tweeting events.
    • Coordinates with Central Communications to track performance and capitalize on trending topics.
    • Develops social media strategies and materials, including toolkits and graphics so as to promote Global research and events via Twitter and other social and online channels.
    • Works with Communications Director to surface Global content on influential digital outlets that may feature or co-feature content; establishes new or ongoing relationships with bloggers and online influencers.
    • In coordination with the Communications Director, advises and develops new strategies and tactics to improve overall online effectiveness, impact, and traffic.
    • Coordinates with Central Communications staff to promote Global content on Brookings-wide social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and monitors the effectiveness of outreach.
    • Tracks mentions of Global scholars in external blogs.
    • Trains scholars, research staff, and coordinators in social media outreach, search engine optimization, blogging best practices, and other online outreach activities.
    • Investigates other online outreach resources, including Google Scholar, Reddit, and other online platforms.
    • Other duties as assigned. 

     

    Publications and Editing (15%)

    • Produces and disseminates twice-monthly Global Connection e-newsletter and other external electronic communications in coordination with Central Communications using Hubspot.
    • Tracks and reports e-newsletter metrics, and coordinates with Central Communications staff to continually improve newsletters.

     

    Web Analytics and Strategic Improvements (10%)

    • Evaluates the performance of the program’s web pages regularly to determine how best to improve upon the use and impact of the site. Works with the Central Communications analytics team to interpret and report web usage statistics, including electronic newsletter statistics.
    • Maintains proficiency in HTML and other online communications applications and standards (e.g., participates in training sessions, learns new software applications to further develop skills).
    • Monitors activity of web content using Parse.ly and other analytics tools and coordinates with Central Communications staff to optimize web pages.
    • Pulls web content analytics and develop web reports for development, donor, and funder reports.

    Qualifications

    Education/Experience Requirements:

    Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.  Minimum of three years of related experience required including communications/web site design.  Writing, editing or proofreading experience preferred; experience/interest with graphic design is a plus. Existing relationships with bloggers and online commentators and new media expertise is desirable. Experience in managing social media platforms, and working in a policy or educational environment is desirable.

     

    Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

     

    Must have demonstrated excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills.  Strong oral and written communications skills. Ability to prioritize, and to work under pressure with discretion and mature judgment. Must be a self-starter and work well with others. Proficiency with WYSIWYG software and HTML required. Knowledge of or interest in global economic and development policies is preferred.  Familiarity with content management systems desirable; familiarity with SharePoint, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop a plus.
