  • Overview

    The Communications Department's mission is to provide the tools, strategies, products and programs to support the brand and its content, and to continually grow Brookings’s impact and effectiveness as a change agent for public policy in the United States and around the world. This purpose is realized if we help our scholars raise awareness, set the agenda and shape the debate around the public policy issues they choose to address. 

     

    The Web Developer focuses on coding and web development for both the front-end and back-end of the Brookings website, as well as providing coding and web development support to the analytics team and other staff in the Office of Communications.

    Responsibilities

    Front-End Development  (50%)

    • Code and develop data visualizations and webpages based on design comps, and to highlight research by Brookings scholars
    • Use responsive design in coding and ensure quality control on a range of desktop, tablet and mobile devices

     

    Back-End Development  (30%)

    • Engage with developers at our website vendor to fix site bugs and to make other back-end improvements to the site and our CMS instance
    • Work with our website vendor on web development aspects of our upcoming website redesign, as needed

     

    Other  (20%)

    • Advise our web analytics team on database querying
    • Set up analytics tracking in Google Tag Manager
    • Provide web development support and technical advice to other Office of Communications staff, as needed

    Qualifications

    Education/Experience Requirements: 

    Bachelor’s degree required, degree in computer science preferred. Minimum three years of work experience developing for the web. Must present online portfolio of work that shows versatile web coding ability. Experience with front-end and back-end development is required. Experience developing templates for CMS preferred. Familiarity with optimizing graphics for online use required.

     

    Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

    Thorough knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and responsive design. Familiarity with WordPress and other CMS templating to maintain quality assurance on final products. Familiarity with PHP and SQL. Experience with Google Analytics, Big Query and Google Tag Manager preferred. Working knowledge of other aspects of web development and technologies. Familiarity with compatibility and cross-platform issues related to the major browsers and operating systems. Excellent spoken, written, and visual communication skills. Ability to meet tough deadlines and juggle multiple projects.
