  • Overview

    The Senior Accountant is an integral part of the Controller’s Office at Brookings and will work under the direction of the Accounting Manager. The Senior Accountant’s main responsibilities include contracts payment review, fixed assets accounting and accounts receivable (AR) review and reconciliation. The Senior Accountant will also participate in the monthly close process, reviewing accounts and preparing journal entries.

    Responsibilities

    General Accounting (45%)

    • Reviews and enters monthly standard journal entries into accounting system; prepares monthly adjusting journal entries, as necessary.
    • Reviews and reconciles assigned general ledger accounts monthly, clearing any open items and resolving any discrepancies.
    • Assists with monthly closing of the general ledger, including analysis of assigned revenue and expense accounts and preparation of adjustment as needed.
    • Assists with annual external audit as needed, including preparation of work papers and pulling documentation.

    Contracts, Fixed Assets and Accounts Receivable (45%)

    • Contract payments: maintains contracts payments log, reviews and approves contract payments requests, reviews contract payments terms, verify contract payee's tax status for withholding, manages contract payments accrual and re-accrual process.
    • Fixed Assets Accounting: maintains accurate fixed assets records; prepares depreciation entries and reconciles all fixed assets accounts on monthly basis.
    • Accounts Receivable: maintains aging schedule, reconciles all AR accounts; works with programs on aging items, on-account items, and researches/resolves any issues/discrepancies.

    Accounting Support (15%)

    • Serves as backup for the following functions when person primarily responsible is out of the office: cash receipts log, daily cash flow, payroll processing, cash application.
    • Any other ad hoc project as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Education/Experience Requirements:

     

    A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business is required. CPA or Masters degree preferred. Six or more years of relevant accounting experience to include general ledger, fixed assets and accounts receivable. Experience with payroll desired. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. 

     

    Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

    Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP); general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable processes and internal controls required. Experience with ERP software required, PeopleSoft Financials experience desired with a focus on general ledger, accounts receivable and accounts payable. Familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite, with good working knowledge of Outlook, Word, and Excel. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be detail oriented and organized, with excellent problem-solving skills and a high level of accuracy. Excellent analytical skills and research capability. Ability to work independently but also in a team environment. Ability to understand complex accounting issues. Ability to accurately collect and relay information.
