    About the Hutchins Center: The mission of the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy is to improve the quality and efficacy of fiscal and monetary policies and public understanding of them. It draws on the expertise of Brookings scholars and of experts in government, academia, think tanks and business. By commissioning research, convening private and public events, it seeks to generate new thinking, promote constructive criticism and provide a forum for reasoned debate.


    About Economic Studies: The Economic Studies program analyzes current and emerging economic issues facing the United States and the world and provides innovative, practical policy recommendations. ES’s work covers a broad array of issues, including the labor market, economic and financial regulation, health, inequality, social policy, and fiscal and monetary policies.

    Responsibilities

    Ready to contribute to Brookings success?

     

    Brookings is seeking a Fellow or Senior Fellow to join the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy in Economic Studies, to conduct in-depth, high-quality policy-relevant economic research. We are particularly interested in specialists in labor or international macroeconomics. The fellow will conduct original policy-relevant research in field(s) of expertise, independently and in collaboration with other scholars inside and outside Brookings and will commission research from outside scholars. They will plan and execute public and/or private events to share and discuss this research and other pressing issues of fiscal and monetary policy. They will develop and maintain relationships with internal and external research partners, current and prospective donors, and key economic policy stakeholders, and work with Communications staff to effectively promote and disseminate their research.

     

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

         

    Research (60%)

    • Conduct original, in-depth, high-quality, policy-relevant research in field(s) of expertise and related areas.
    • Recruit, commission, edit, and promote research from other scholars, both inside and outside of Brookings.
    • Publish research through Brookings or in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Author or co-author blogs, op-eds, and other commentary.
    • Work with and mentor research assistants and analysts, to produce research and to facilitate their professional development.
    • Work with Center leadership to help shape and contribute to Center’s research agenda.

    Communications & Dissemination (40%)

    • Promote Center’s mission and expand its influence.
    • Engage with academics, policymakers, and industry experts to identify authors, speakers, and discussants for publications and events.
    • Organize private and public events to discuss and promote their own and commissioned research as well as public policy issues.
    • Collaborate with ES Communications and Hutchins team to create and execute dissemination and promotion strategies for research products.
    • Serve as a resource to media, as appropriate, in areas of expertise.
    • Assist in stewardship of current and prospective donors.
    • Participate in Brookings seminars, working groups, recruitment, etc., and generally act as a good citizen of the Center, program, and Institution.

    Education/Experience Requirements: 

     

    Ph.D. or equivalent in economics or related field preferred. At least six years of relevant experience required. Substantial body of policy-relevant research required. The successful candidate will be a productive scholar with potential to be a recognized leader in their field(s). Interest in or experience with mentoring junior staff strongly preferred. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

     

    Knowledge/Skills Requirements: 

     

    Able to lead independent research and competently manage issue-focused meetings, initiatives, high-level conferences, and other events without supervision. Demonstrated ability to write clearly and for a variety of audiences. Ability to work collegially with staff at all levels and in all job profiles. Commitment to contributing to a supportive and productive workplace with a diverse workforce.
