The Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies (AIET) Initiative at Brookings aims to advance good governance of transformative new technologies. With so many of these new technologies’ capabilities and implications still largely unknown, it is critical that the next generation of policies and norms is informed by ideals of economic and national security, transparency, fairness, and inclusion. 


By publishing timely, rigorous research and bringing together leaders and researchers from across the technology and policymaking sectors, the Brookings AIET Initiative strives to identify the governance models and best practices necessary for society to gain the benefits of AI and emerging technology while responsibly managing their risks.  Under the leadership of Brookings President John R. Allen, the independent and non-partisan research of the Brookings AIET Initiative draws on scholars from all five research programs at Brookings, as well as relevant experts from academia, government, civil society, and the technology industry. Importantly, the Brookings AIET Initiative seeks to bridge the growing divides between industry, civil society, and policymakers.

The Brookings Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology Initiative is seeking a Managing Editor to lead Brookings TechStream, a new publication that brings together the technology and policy communities to debate the policy implications of new technologies. The Managing Editor will serve as the primary manager of the publication—recruiting writers, managing the publication process, and editing copy. The Managing Editor will also work together with other members of Brookings to produce multimedia projects and other material.  The position represents an opportunity to build a new site from scratch, recruit a leading group of writers and technologists, and to inform the technology policy debate. 


The Managing Editor will add to a team conducting research on a wide range of issues at the intersection of technology and public policy. Brookings TechStream, which discusses the societal and political implications of new technologies, seeks to limit the risks of new products and protocols before they occur. By putting technologists and policymakers in conversation, the site aims to increase the policy fluency of the former and the technical knowledge of the latter. 


The ideal candidate will have experience editing and commissioning articles on a variety of tech issues, working in a collaborative editorial environment, and an understanding of how to pair writers and issues to produce compelling copy. The position requires superior writing and editing skills and demonstrated editorial judgment. It requires superb organizational and interpersonal skills. It requires a self-motivated individual with the ability to multi-task and work with minimal supervision. The position requires an understanding of how to translate technical issues to a wide audience.  


*This is a two-year termed appointment, with a possibility of extension for one additional year, depending on available funding.  


Editorial Direction and Copyediting (70%) 


  • Setting the strategic direction of the site, determining which tech issues to focus on and how to cover them.  
  • Serving as primary editor of articles, blog posts, and other materials to be published on the site. 
  • Regularly work with external vendors to create multimedia and graphic content 
  • Monitoring developments within emerging technology to identify key themes and individuals to write about them.  
  • Conceiving of and delivering technology and policy content that is unique and value-adding within the tech-media ecosystem. 
  • Conceptualizing and implementing digital strategies and projects that respond to current events. 
  • Working with Brookings scholars to translate their research into articles for publication on the site.  
  • Ensuring articles and other written products conform to Brookings style. 
  • In coordination with internal designers and external vendors, managing the production process for articles and other materials to be published on the site.  
  • Ensuring articles and other written products are published on time, and in concert with the AIET Initiative’s priorities. 
  • Publishing articles and other materials as needed on the Brookings website. 


Outreach and Strategic Engagement (30%) 


  • Identifying and recruiting leading technologists to draft short-form articles about emerging technology issues in a timely manner.  
  • In coordination with authors and Communications leadership, managing distribution and outreach strategies.

Education/Experience Requirements:


Required: Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or related field. The position requires an understanding of how to translate technical issues to a wide audience. It is open to individuals with a variety of experience levels.The ideal candidate brings quality ideas and the vision to execute them.  


Familiarity with key sources of emerging technology developments. Proven competence to identify and recruit established and emerging industry leaders for authorship with little or no supervision. Proven publication record. Demonstrated experience engaging policymakers. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. 


Knowledge/Skills Requirements:


Strong knowledge, work experience, and established interest in journalism,  emerging technologies, and/or tech policy. Demonstrated interest in public policy and strong potential for policy impact. Strong written, research, and oral communications skills required; high functionality in Microsoft Office software package and proven expertise in web publishing software such as WordPress, required. Must be able to present research work in a cogent style consistent with standards for Brookings and the field. Ability to meet rapid, multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. Professional demeanor, high level of comfort working in a culturally diverse environment, and with high-profile individuals from academic, policy, corporate, government, and international circles. Ability to work well under pressure with discretion and mature judgment
