Position Location: This position is based in Brookings' Washington, DC office. The person hired for this position must be willing to move to or currently reside in Washington DC, Maryland, or Northern Virginia by their date of hire.
Operating status: Brookings eligible employees are currently authorized to work remotely but will be moving towards a hybrid plan later this year, which will require working both in the office and remotely. All vaccinated Brookings employees who wish to work from the office can do so. Brookings policies on masks and other pandemic mitigation measures will continue to be informed by DC and CDC guidelines.
Vaccine Policy: Brookings has made the safety of our staff and our surrounding community a top priority. As part of that commitment, Brookings recently announced that staff on Brookings campus this fall are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Brookings will require all staff and visitors to submit proof of complete vaccination against COVID-19 to be in buildings.

The Research and Project Assistant, under the supervision of the Vice President, and also supporting the Senior Director of External Relations, will perform duties including: (1) provide highest-quality assistance with collecting and structuring information and messaging to a diverse set of stakeholders; (2) conceptualize and create compelling presentations for key external constituencies including local, state, and federal leaders and funders; (3) support the VP’s and Senior Director’s external relations efforts; (4) provide administrative support back-up and project management duties as required.

Bachelor’s degree in economics, public policy, political science, geography, or other social science or significant additional directly relevant experience in lieu of a bachelor’s degree. Minimum of two years of work experience providing similar work product, in fast-paced, public policy-oriented office (e.g., policy/political organizations, government, non-profit, or academic) required.
Required knowledge/skills include: strong writing and research skills, including ability to contribute to content development; strong experience with creative data visualization and messaging; demonstrated ability to craft positioning and messaging for diverse stakeholder groups; expert facility with Microsoft Office suite, particularly advanced knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; strong organization skills and detail-orientation; strong interpersonal skills and mature judgement; demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment and undertake high-profile writing and design assignments with little supervision.
Preferred knowledge/skills include demonstrated interest in metropolitan/urban issues, including concerns of minority communities; familiarity with advanced statistical and mapping tools like SAS, SPSS and ArcGIS; familiarity with graphic design applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator a plus.
