Position Location: This position is based in Brookings' Washington, DC office. The person hired for this position must be willing to move to or currently reside in Washington DC, Maryland, or Northern Virginia by their date of hire.  

 

Operating status: Brookings eligible employees are currently authorized to work remotely but will be moving towards a hybrid plan later this year, which will require working both in the office and remotely. All vaccinated Brookings employees who wish to work from the office can do so. Brookings policies on masks and other pandemic mitigation measures will continue to be informed by DC and CDC guidelines.  

 

Vaccine Policy: Brookings has made the safety of our staff and our surrounding community a top priority. As part of that commitment, Brookings recently announced that staff on Brookings campus this fall are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.  Brookings will require all staff and visitors to submit proof of complete vaccination against COVID-19 to be in Brookings buildings.

The Digital Media Manager is responsible for leading digital efforts regarding designing, compiling, publishing, and maintaining all digital content for the Metropolitan Policy Program (MPP) at Brookings. The position leads day-to-day website publishing, newsletters, visual assets, and social media. Serves as the branding lead for MPP and provides creative ideas and execution for new products. Coordinates regularly and effectively with the Brookings Central Communications (COMM) teams. Provides project management support on production of all MPP publications and high profile projects.

 

Web Content & Analytics   (40%)

 

Content Production

  • Has knowledge of HTML. Familiarity with content management systems such as WordPress.
  • Creates, updates and maintains all program, center and project webpages under MPP in accordance with Brookings website standards and consistent with program’s research and communications goals. These include blog posts, reports, research briefs, essays, events, about pages, and more.
  • Drafts teaser and summary language to accompany site content.
  • Drafts and manages MPP’s newsletters.
  • Serves as the MPP liaison to the Brookings web team; works with the Communications Director to keep MPP staff apprised of new features and issues of concern as appropriate; coordinates with content creators in other programs.
  • Applies taxonomy and other metadata to optimize content presentation on various parts of the program’s webpages and Brookings website at large.

 Analytics and Insights

  • Serves as MPP’s web analytics authority.
  • Coordinates with Brookings’s central communications staff to optimize web pages; monitors data on page performance and relays key learnings on audience behavior to MPP’s Communications Director.
  • Coordinates the production of quarterly and yearly analytics reports for internal distribution.

 

Design and Production   (40%)

  • Serves as lead designer for MPP on all visual elements, including reports, charts and graphs, infographics, event promotion graphics, and branded content.
  • Uses Adobe InDesign and Illustrator to create compelling graphics, page layouts, and design templates for scholarly research papers, including print-ready PDFs, using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator.
  • Helps coordinate the development of MPP brand and marketing collateral, including leave-behinds and comprehensive briefing books for meetings and events.
  • Works with MPP’s Communications Director and Brookings’s central communications to ensure adherence to Brookings style guide.
  • Brainstorms webpage layouts for special projects.

 

Digital Communications   (10%)

  • Brainstorms creative ways in which MPP can raise its visibility with core audiences and grow its social media followers, email subscribers, and website visitors.
  • Provides essential input on Communications & Engagement products such as event productions and video productions.
  • Supports live tweeting of MPP events.

 

Communications Strategy & Creative Leadership   (10%)

  • Designs creative branding for high profile projects for MPP and the institution.
  • Supports project management, and organization, for high profile projects for MPP and the institution.
  • Provides communications strategy based on analytics and trade knowledge.

Education/Experience Requirements:

 

Successful candidates will have a professional background in graphic design, journalism, public relations, marketing, corporate communications, or a related field, and possess strong graphic design, writing, editing and mixed media skills. Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Minimum of four years’ relevant experience. Exceptional project and time management skills, an obsessive attention to detail, and the ability to work well under pressure, within tight deadlines, and with minimal supervision as part of a team are a must. Proven interest in political science, public policy, and/or urban and metropolitan policy. Think tank or public relations agency experience a plus. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

 

 

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

 

Strong understanding of and experience with the web, including familiarity with web content management systems and ability to problem solve and do relevant research and web analysis required. Strong oral and written communications skills a must. Strong experience with the following: HTML, WordPress, Microsoft Office, InDesign and Illustrator required. Must be able to learn other new technology applications for communications and design; must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail, high initiative, strong interpersonal skills, discretion, and mature judgment; must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
