The Global Economy and Development (“Global”) program at Brookings aims to offer innovative policy solutions and tools to help global, national, and local policymakers build more inclusive and sustainable economic systems that deliver prosperity for all. The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD), housed within Global, generates leading research and practical insights to advance global sustainable development and implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within and across all countries.
Position Location: This position is based in Brookings' Washington, DC office. The person hired for this position must be willing to move to or currently reside in Washington DC, Maryland, or Northern Virginia by their date of hire.
Operating status: Brookings eligible employees are currently authorized to work remotely but will be moving towards a hybrid plan later this year, which will require working both in the office and remotely. All vaccinated Brookings employees who wish to work from the office can do so. Brookings policies on masks and other pandemic mitigation measures will continue to be informed by DC and CDC guidelines.
Vaccine Policy: Brookings has made the safety of our staff and our surrounding community a top priority. As part of that commitment, Brookings recently announced that staff on Brookings campus this fall are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Brookings will require all staff and visitors to submit proof of complete vaccination against COVID-19 to be in Brookings buildings.

Research analysts in CSD support scholars by providing research, writing, data, statistical, and geospatial analysis related to policies and trends pertinent to global sustainable development. Focus areas of research include topics such as extreme poverty, inequality, the geography of deprivation, the global middle class, globalization, global public goods, SDG benchmarking, SDG implementation, technology for sustainable development, multilateral policymaking, fragile states, and sustainable development finance.
As an integral member of the CSD research team, this research analyst will work with the Senior Fellow, the CSD Director, and other Center scholars to perform analysis with limited supervision; deliver high quality outputs in a timely manner; participate in the development, dissemination and presentation of research findings; assist in the organization of meetings and events; and provide administrative assistance as needed.
This is a one-year termed appointment, with the potential for renewal.
The below allocation of duties describes the average division between tasks. The actual work will vary depending on the particular project needs of the scholars with whom the research analyst may be assigned to work at different junctures.

Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Statistics, natural science, or social science field required. Master’s degree in Economics, Statistics, Global Development, Sustainable Development, International Affairs, Public Policy, or related field strongly preferred. Strong academic record essential, having excelled at econometrics and statistical coursework. Minimum two years of work experience in empirical research and quantitative data analysis, potentially including previous experience working as a research assistant with a professor. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.
Proficiency in Stata required, with experience and confidence in accurately manipulating and analyzing large datasets. Expertise with ArcGIS and R highly desirable. Knowledge of SPSS, LaTeX/LyX, Python, and Matlab a plus. Successful candidate must be detail-oriented with a passion for precision, in addition to the capacity to connect data insights and bring them to a larger conversation. Ideal candidate can build on methods to advance tool sets and techniques. Candidates should also be knowledgeable of, and have keen interest in poverty reduction, global sustainable development, and global economic issues. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills are important for the role. Ability and willingness to organize information, undertake research assignments with minimal supervision, work well under pressure with discretion and mature judgement, collaborate with diverse colleagues, and meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment are all essential. Successful candidates will have a professional demeanor and be comfortable working with high-profile individuals from academia/civil society/government/international organizations.
