The Office of Development manages the Trustees, institutional partnerships, leadership giving, the International Advisory Council, the Brookings Council, the Brookings Society, and overall fundraising strategies for the Executive Office and Institution at large.

Position Location: This position is based in Brookings' Washington, DC office. The person hired for this position must be willing to move to or currently reside in Washington DC, Maryland, or Northern Virginia by their date of hire.  


Operating status: Brookings eligible employees are currently authorized to work remotely but will be moving towards a hybrid plan later this year, which will require working both in the office and remotely. All vaccinated Brookings employees who wish to work from the office can do so. Brookings policies on masks and other pandemic mitigation measures will continue to be informed by DC and CDC guidelines.  


Vaccine Policy: Brookings has made the safety of our staff and our surrounding community a top priority. As part of that commitment, Brookings recently announced that staff on Brookings campus this fall are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.  Brookings will require all staff and visitors to submit proof of complete vaccination against COVID-19 to be in Brookings buildings.

The Development Services Assistant provides administrative support to the Development Services Team broadly and dedicated support to the Director of Development Services. The Assistant will provide back up to the team’s coordinators and managers across services and research functions. The Development Services Assistant will work with counterparts in similar positions throughout Central Development and Brookings research programs to coordinate efforts.


Administrative Support   (65%)

  • Manages and maintains the Director of Development Services’s calendar. Schedules all appointments, meetings, and conferences while coordinating related logistics as needed.
  • Regularly updates Director of Development Services on internal and external issues and requests, as needed.
  • Responsible for reconciling credit card statements for the Director of Development Services.
  • For the Development Services Team, schedules team meetings and prepares/updates meeting agendas, documents, and other necessary materials. Ensures the Director of Development Services sees and reads all necessary materials to prepare for meetings.
  • Routes contracts and invoices for signature or payment via Sharepoint.
  • Orders office supplies and maintains an updated inventory of current stock.
  • Receives and screens phone calls from the general development line and emails sent to the general development email inbox. Handles or appropriately refers all requests for information.
  • Provides support to the Development Research Team as needed. Provides basic copyediting and proofreading support.
  • Greets guests and provides other day-of event assistance for Institution and Department events as needed, such as the International Advisory Council and Board of Trustees meetings.
  • Provides assistant-level project management support for ad-hoc projects.


Human Resources Support   (20%)

  • Assists the Director of Development Services with basic HR tasks, including organizing and maintaining files, completing forms, scheduling meetings.
  • Initiates, prepares, and provides follow-up on orientations (training sessions, business card requests, office supplies, IT needs, etc.); completes orientation processes and schedules; communicates with incoming employees and affiliates as needed; works with Institutional staff to ensure smooth onboarding of new arrivals.
  • Assists departing employees and affiliates with checkout and departure procedures.
  • Prepares and documents changes in status of employees and affiliates.
  • Maintains records, organizational charts, space use records, and personnel files


Gift Processing and Data Maintenance   (15%)

  • Executes on data entry, hygiene, and data maintenance projects to further the efficiency and accuracy of the Raiser’s Edge database.
  • Assists the Director of Development Services and Associate Director of Development Services with data entry projects as needed.
  • Helps organize and maintain Central Development’s Sharepoint document libraries.

Education/Experience Requirements:


Bachelor’s degree required; a minimum of two years professional and/or related experience required. Demonstrated ability to support executives. Familiarity with fundraising and fundraising software, preferred. Experience in a related institution and/or familiarity with public policy organizations and strong writing skills is highly desirable. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.


Knowledge/Skills Requirements:


Excellent interpersonal, organizational, writing, researching, proofreading, and administrative skills. Strong attention to detail and problem solving. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, turn things around quickly, and manage competing demands with a high commitment to customer service. Self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. Professional demeanor and ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
