The Governance Studies program at Brookings is dedicated to analyzing policy issues, political institutions and processes, and contemporary governance challenges. Our scholarship identifies areas in need of reform and proposes specific solutions with the goals of: improving the performance of the national government; informing debate; and providing policymakers with expert analysis and ideas to ensure better institutional governance.

 

Position Location: This position is based in Brookings' Washington, DC office. The person hired for this position must be willing to move to or currently reside in Washington DC, Maryland, or Northern Virginia by their date of hire.  

 

Operating status: Brookings eligible employees are currently authorized to work remotely but will be moving towards a hybrid plan later this year, which will require working both in the office and remotely. All vaccinated Brookings employees who wish to work from the office can do so. Brookings policies on masks and other pandemic mitigation measures will continue to be informed by DC and CDC guidelines.  

 

Vaccine Policy: Brookings has made the safety of our staff and our surrounding community a top priority. As part of that commitment, Brookings recently announced that staff on Brookings campus this fall are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.  Brookings will require all staff and visitors to submit proof of complete vaccination against COVID-19 to be in Brookings buildings.

The Visual Design and Website Coordinator supports the visual brand and visual system for the Governance Studies (GS) program at Brookings, including creating digital and print content that fits harmoniously within the broader Brookings Institution visual system; developing and maintaining all components of GS web pages; and utilizing best practices in data visualization to effectively display quantitative and qualitative information, illustrate research ideas and concepts, and promote the work of Governance Studies.

 

Visual Content Design & Creation   (50%)

  • Working with the Director of Communications, develop and deploy a web content and design strategy that draws attention to the work of Governance Studies, and its scholars.
  • Create visuals that fit harmoniously within the broader Brookings Institution visual system.
  • Collaborate with research staff to evaluate approaches that effectively visualize qualitative & quantitative information that enable the creation of clear, convincing visuals that are easily understandable.
  • Design and layout all Governance Studies reports, incorporating text, photographs, graphics & illustrationsin PDF using InDesign or in HTML using WordPress.
  • Collaborate with digital communications to create infographics and other visual content to be used tactically on various social media platforms.
  • Collaborate with the video team to support multimedia projects, including the creation of visual storyboards and creation of assets for motion graphics & animations.
  • Coordinate with external designers, vendors, and brand partners on collaborative projects.
  • Working with theGovernance Studies’ Managing Editor, ensure all products adhere to Brookings style and brand guidelines, establish project timelines, and to schedule release date.
  • Perform quality assurance on final products in conjunction with Brookings researchers and communications staff.
  • Working with senior digital & creative staff, maintain visual guidance systems such as visual guidelines, user interface kits and platform templates that empower non-design staff to create on-brand content; provide training and support to Governance Studies scholars and staff on template use.
  • Communicate clearly and with urgency regarding scope, budget, deadlines, and requirements for design projects.

Website Coordination   (40%)

  • Using established website content management system, create, update, and maintain all Governance Studies content in accordance with Brookings standards and consistent with program’s research and communications goals. These include the program homepage, special project pages, reports, blogs, scholar biography pages, and more.
  • Apply taxonomy and other metadata to optimize content presentation on various parts of the program’s pages and Brookings website at large.
  • Recommend sound search engine optimization practices for all GS content published on website.
  • Suggest photography and/or create other visual design elements to enhance all web publications.
  • Update and maintain expert biography pages with new content and information.
  • Assist with the conceptualization, development, and maintenance of new web-based content, features, and tools.
  • Actively participate in staff discussions and strategic planning meetings. Serve as liaison to Brookings web team; keep the VP and center directors informed of new features and issues of concern; coordinate with other programs on cross-organizational projects and initiatives.
  • Monitor daily automated reports on web performance and evaluate the performance of the program's web pages regularly; work with analytics team to conduct a monthly analysis of the performance of the program's web pages; prepare reports and charts demonstrating web performance to share with the program.
  • Maintain proficiency in HTML, SEO practices, and other online communications applications and standards (e.g., participates in training sessions, learns new software applications to further develop skills).

Digital Communication   (10%)

  • Brainstorm creative concepts such as videos, viral material, and social media content to help raise visibility with core audiences and promote GS research, scholars, and events.
  • Create branded PowerPoint slides, signage, pamphlets, reports, or other digital or printed materials for events and conferences.
  • Format and distribute electronic newsletters; advise on best newsletter strategy and practices; analyze and report on newsletter metrics and continually improve newsletters.
  • Occasionally support Governance Studies’ in-person events, staffing or setting up, as needed.

Education/Experience Requirements:

 

Minimum bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a design-related discipline. Minimum two years of work experience in web design and data visualization. Familiarity with optimizing graphics for online use required. Knowledge of and interest in domestic policy issues strongly preferred.  Please attach online portfolio of work that shows versatile design aesthetic and examples of thoughtful interaction and data visualization design.

 

 

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

 

Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and WordPress experience required. Tactical understanding of social networks like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube required. Familiarity with design/UX best practice for the range of display types from desktop to mobile. Understanding of industry standards and best practices in the areas of interaction/UX design, color theory, typography, layout & composition, and presentation design. Working knowledge of web development and technologies as they relate to design. Excellent spoken, written, and visual communication skills. Willingness and eagerness to grow and proactively seeks to learn new methods, approaches, and technologies.  Ability to meet tight deadlines and juggle multiple projects. Exceptional creativity, enthusiasm, team spirit, commitment, and professionalism. Training provided to candidates that meet most requirements.
