About the Economic Studies Program: The Economic Studies program analyzes current and emerging economic issues facing the United States and the world and, based on that research, provides innovative, practical policy recommendations. ES’s work covers a broad array of economic issues, including economic growth, economic opportunity and mobility, the labor market, regulation, health policy, the environment, tax policy, retirement policy, and fiscal and monetary policy. Economic Studies scholars influence key economic policies by conducting rigorous and relevant research and then disseminating and communicating their findings to the policy community and to the broader public.
Position Location: This position is hybrid. Hybrid positions combine regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC office with the option of at least two days of remote work each week.

Senior Fellows in the Economic Studies (ES) Program have significant experience in the profession and are recognized for outstanding expertise and contributions in their fields. Senior Fellows shape research and analysis in their areas of expertise to devise new paths for policy impact. They conduct, publish, and promote in-depth, high quality public policy research on topics of their choosing in areas of expertise to support the ES mission. In addition to independent research, senior fellows seek opportunities to collaborate with scholars in ES, across the Institution, and externally. Senior Fellows achieve impact by sharing their work with policymakers and other stakeholders, presenting their research at academic conferences, and utilizing traditional and social media. Senior Fellows direct the work of and provide mentorship to the junior staff that support their work. They partner with development and finance staff to build and steward funding for their work, and partner with communications staff to effectively promote and disseminate their work. Senior Fellows also engage in activities that support a scholarly community including attending and presenting at seminars, engaging in recruitment activities, and supporting other program goals. In all their work, Senior Fellows perform in a way that supports a welcoming and inclusive community while upholding Brookings’ standards of quality and independence. This includes, but is not limited to, appropriately managing all conflicts of interest and all interactions with foreign governments.
Research
Uses significant research and policy experience to help define research and policy questions for assigned team to ensure ES work is forward looking and informed by the external environment.
Conducts in-depth, high-quality public policy research in area of expertise, independently and in collaboration with other scholars. Provides guidance and support to more junior fellows to support their work.
Authors or co-authors policy and research reports, blogs, op-eds, and other commentary.
Develops and delivers presentations for research projects and policy priorities.
Meets with and briefs relevant external contacts on research.
Presents research and gives talks at select outside meetings and conferences.
Convenes private roundtables, author conferences and public events to inform research and disseminate work.
Serves as an informal advisor to more junior fellows and research staff. Works with and mentors research assistants and analysts, to produce research and to facilitate their professional development.
Leads and actively participates in ES program and scholar community activities including seminars, recruiting, service to the profession, and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and generally acts as a good citizen of their center, program, and Brookings.
Ensures all research activity is aligned with Brookings’s policies.
Communications & Dissemination
Develops flexible outreach, engagement and communications strategy for research and policy work, in conjunction with the Communications team, that can support policy impact in an uncertain and changing landscape.
Promotes program and center’s work to expand influence.
Engages with academics, policymakers, and industry experts to identify authors, speakers, and discussants for publications and events.
Organizes private and public events to discuss and promote research and inform public policy issues.
Serves as a resource to media, as appropriate, in areas of expertise.
Ensures that any work subject to Brookings Quality Review process has successfully been through the process before publication.
Fundraising
With the ES Development team, leads fundraising and stewardship efforts for current and perspective donors.
Designs, develops, and stewards funding proposals and works with ES development team on broad development priorities as needed.
Develops and maintains responsive and productive relationships with existing funders and leads engagement with potential funders in consultation with Development team.

Education/Experience Requirements
A Ph.D. or equivalent in economics or a related field is required. At least ten years of relevant experience is required. The successful candidate will be recognized for outstanding expertise, contributions, and leadership in their field. They will have a record of distinguished experience and/or leadership in government, academia, the non-profit sector or the private sector. Must have a demonstrated ability to understand and write knowledgeably about public policy research of the economic caliber necessary for publication in a top academic journal.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
Must be able to lead independent research and competently lead issue-focused meetings, initiatives, high-level conferences, and other events without supervision. Must be comfortable working with high-ranking decision makers, senior government officials, current and potential funders, and Brookings senior management. Commitment to contributing to a supportive and productive workplace with a diverse workforce. Must have an interest in or experience with mentoring junior staff and an ability to work collegially with staff at all levels and in all job profiles.
