About the Office of Communications (Comms):

 

The mission of the Office of Communications is to provide the tools, strategies, products, and programs to support the brand and its content, and to continually grow Brookings’s impact and effectiveness as a change agent for public policy in the United States and around the world. This purpose is realized if we help our scholars raise awareness, set the agenda, and shape the debate around the public policy issues they choose to address. 

 

The Brookings Studio’s mission is to provide broadcast-quality services to the Brookings community, enabling global outreach by our scholars to television, radio, and web-based news outlets.  We are successful when scholars can focus on their interview, while our team operates the facilities and manages the logistics.

 

Note: Please be advised that The Brookings Institution is currently undergoing a multi-year strategic implementation, and as part of this effort, your role, supervisor, and program may change.

 

Position Location: This position is hybrid. Hybrid positions combine regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC office with the option of at least two days of remote work each week.

 

Please Note: This position is included in the staff bargaining unit, Brookings United, affiliated with the IFPTE Local 70 union, and is covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

 

Responsibilities

As Multimedia Manager, this role plays a crucial part in promoting Brookings’ research and insights to key audiences through the creation and distribution of innovative and compelling audio and visual content. This position oversees the lifecycle of multimedia projects—from conceptualization and shooting to audio engineering and video editing—with a specific focus on podcast production and managing studio operations. They are a creative collaborator and have a keen eye for creating content that positions Brookings at the forefront of digital media.

 

Multimedia Production (40%)

  • Content Development: Conceptualize, develop, shoot, and edit compelling video and audio content that presents research and insights to stakeholders in engaging ways. 
  • Visual Storytelling: Utilize proficiency in audio/video production to create content that aligns with the Institution's brand identity. 
  • Project Management: Manage complex multimedia projects by effectively scoping, prioritizing, and executing tasks to meet quality standards and deadlines. 

Audio Production and Podcast Management (30%)

  • Sound Design: Serve as the primary sound designer for multimedia projects, ensuring professional-grade audio quality across all platforms. 
  • Studio Operations: Oversee the management of the podcast recording studio and mobile productions, coordinating schedules and technical resources to ensure operational excellence. 
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on recording equipment and manage mobile podcast studio gear. 
  • Strategic Growth: Collaborate with the multimedia team to monitor podcast performance and co-develop editorial or strategic changes that drive the overall success, audience engagement, and impact of the Brookings’ podcast network 
  • Training: Train staff on the use of mobile podcast equipment and enforce studio rules to ensure a professional recording environment.

Asset Management & Governance (20%)

  • Library Management: Manage and maintain a library of multimedia assets—including video, photo, and audio to ensure proper organization, tagging, and accessibility. 
  • Media Monitoring: Monitor and archive media appearances by Brookings scholars using TVEyes, ensuring high-value media hits are preserved, tagged, and integrated into the institutional multimedia library. 
  • Brand Standards: Support the development and dissemination of governance, training, and best practice materials relating to visual brand and multimedia standards. 
  • Licensing: Manage institutional accounts for photo and music licensing platforms to support production needs across the team. 

Communications/Internal Support Strategies (10%)

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to incorporate multimedia tailored to identified audiences into campaigns that promote our research and initiatives.
  • Trend Monitoring: Stay up to date and advise leadership on latest web, design, and social media tools and trends.
  • Culture & Systems: Actively contribute to internal team and/or organizational work that shapes our systems and our culture.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements


Bachelor’s degree in Multimedia Design, Digital Media, Audio Production, Communications, or a related field is required or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates should have a minimum of five years of experience in multimedia content creation, specifically audio and video production. Experience working in a fast-paced environment is highly desirable, and demonstrated experience within a broader communications office and/or in a public policy setting is preferred.

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

 

Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Premiere Pro and Photoshop.  Advanced knowledge of Adobe Audition and professional microphone placement/studio recording techniques.  Technical command in operating professional audio mixing boards and recording consoles, and multi-track recording for both studio and field environments.  Experience with multimedia asset management systems and digital tagging.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor complex research messages for diverse audiences. Highly organized and capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously, meeting quality standards and deadlines. A collaborative mindset with experience working across teams to achieve common objectives is essential, along with strong interpersonal skills, discretion, poise, and mature judgment.
